The story of the Two-Stroke Mafia.

The phrase was coined by my son Max while the boys and I were working on their ice bikes down at the shop. Max proclaimed that he and his brother were “The Two-Stroke Mafia.” I laughed and asked him where he read that. He said that he thought it up. A moment later he says to his brother “We are the Two-Stroke Mafia, join us or be beaten.” I turned around laughing and again asked where he read that, He said “Nowhere. We’re the only guys running two-strokes out on the ice, so I thought it up.” Mind you, at the time, Max was 10.

Now Max is almost 16, and yes, my boys both still run two-strokes. The Two-Stroke Mafia has become all of us. It goes back to the roots of dirt bike racing. The reason we raced as kids was because we could afford it. Two-strokes are much cheaper to fix and damn powerful. The four-strokes have ruined my old sport. $10k for a bike that when it blows up cost $3-4k to fix is crazy. Now, we’re quite happy and damn good at working on four-strokes, they are some amazing machines, but our hearts lie with two-strokes. The Two-Stroke Mafia, join us or be beaten.
